The EBGL is 5 years old!
May 31, 2011
The EBGL as you know it officially started in May, 2006.
For those of you who may not know our story, the EBGL actually evolved out of a small, role playing game group that met weekly at Mike's dining room table back in 2003-2005. In 2005 we started calling ourselves the "Martyrs Gaming Club" (mostly because Mike already owned a similarly-named domain for a World of Warcraft guild) and used the website www.martyrgaming.ca to post RPG campaign updates, etc. When our RPG campaign finally ended we slowly began to branch out into various Euro and American board games that Shawn R. owned. Friends started inviting other friends out to play and, in May 2006, we had become an official board gaming club with 10 members!
Seeing the growth potential, Mike and Shawn decided to re-brand the group in 2009 as the Edmonton & Area Board Gaming League, launched www.ebgl.ca, and moved the events from Mike's dining room table down to his basement.
Zoom ahead two more years to 2011 and we're now approx. 40 members strong, with store sponsorship, and have officially outgrown Mike's entire house. :)
On behalf our club and sponsors, thank you to all of our members (past and present) who have made these past 5+ years extremely successful and fun for the EBGL and we hope we can continue the trend for many more years to come!
Note: we plan to commemorate this date by awarding everyone who attended any EBGL event in May with a special, one-time anniversary achievement.
