Gamer Biography:

I had the usual experience with "traditional" boardgames (Monopoly, Clue, Risk), some parlour games (Chess), and video games (mostly PC). Boardgames were something I was fond of, but not overly passionate about. But then I was introduced to Settlers of Catan around the year 2000. This seems to have been the "gateway game" that showed me what was possible and I recognized a paradigm shift in the industry. I've been very interested in the hobby since then. Our family now has around 100 boardgames. When it comes to choosing how to spend "family time," it seems like physical activities (e.g., playing badminton together, or hiking) or cognitive tasks that foster interaction (e.g., boardgames, escape rooms) are superior options (compared with passively consuming video media or something). As my rapidly maturing children reach adulthood and prepare to leave the nest, I am looking outward to other venues in order to meet new people and continue to have opportunities for gaming.
